Hexham and Hadrian’s Wall.
Visit the attractive market town of Hexham for a lunch break. In the afternoon, we explore nearby Hadrian’s Wall. Begun in AD122 to stop raids from the Pictish tribes in the north, the wall was the edge of the Roman Empire. Today large sections still remain and we visit Chester’s (English Heritage, admission extra), one of the best preserved forts, with a fine collection of Roman ‘finds’.
